Mi Notebook Pro vs Ultra

Here is the Mi Notebook Pro vs Ultra comparison. But we have also compared the Mi Notebook Pro 120G with the Notebook Ultra to give you a clear idea of which laptop offers the best value of all.

The Mi Notebook Pro and Ultra have been in the market for quite a long, but they still hold their positions as the best business laptops.

People were confused about these two laptops, but after the launch of the Mi Notebook Pro 120G, people are more confused now.

To end this confusion, we have compared all these laptops.

So, here is the Mi Notebook Pro vs Ultra comparison.

Who should not buy MI Notebook Pro 120 or 120G?

  • Let’s get straight to the point, if your budget can’t exceed the Rs 60k mark, there is no need to look at the Notebook Pro 120 or 120G, as both these laptops cost more than Rs 70000.
  • If you need a laptop that lasts longer on a single charge, then Notebook Pro 120 and 120G will disappoint you as the battery on both lasts for around 4 hours.

These two reasons are enough for many to skip the 120 and 120G laptops. If not, then these laptops could be the best options for you.

But MI Notebook Ultra is also in the league and goes toe-to-toe against 120 and 120G. So let’s compare these laptops first.

Mi Notebook Ultra vs Mi Notebook Pro 120G

⦿ Similarities

  • The Mi Notebook Ultra and Mi Notebook Pro 120G have excellent build quality. Both these laptops are made of aluminum and have the most premium build quality.
  • For the price, the display quality is amazing on both. Notebook ultra has 241 PPI, whereas Pro 120G has 216 PPI. So the text or images look a little sharper on Ultra. However, Ultra has only a 90Hz panel, and 120G has a smoother 120Hz panel. Colors are appealing on both, and there is not a significant difference in display quality.
  • Features like a backlit keyboard, fingerprint scanner, Type C Thunderbolt 4 port, and WiFi 6 are available on both.
  • The audio from dual speakers is decent and almost similar on both.

⦿ Differences

  • The Intel i5-12450H of Notebook Pro 120G is more powerful than the i7-11370H on MI Notebook Ultra in almost all departments. This power difference further increases if we compare i5-12450H with the i5-11300H.
  • The Notebook Pro 120G has a dedicated MX550 Graphics card, which can handle light gaming and video editing. The Notebook Ultra can also do the same tasks, but not as efficiently as the Pro 120G.
  • Note that the MX550 Graphics card is made to handle the medium level of gaming and editing. Don’t expect miracles out of it.
  • Battery life on Ultra easily lasts for 7+ hours, but Notebook Pro 120G only touches the 4 hours mark.
  • Because of the larger display, the Notebook Ultra is 200 grams heavier. The Notebook Pro 120G weighs 1.5kg and is easy to carry.

Mi Notebook Ultra vs Pro 120G, which one should you buy?

There is no doubt that the Notebook Pro 120G is more powerful than the Notebook Ultra. But the question is, how much faster is it in real life?

Compared to the i5-11300H, the i5-12450H is around 35% faster. It’s a significant difference and can’t be ignored.

Compared to the i7 11370H, the i5-12450H is around 25% faster.

So it’s clear that Notebook Pro 120G makes more sense for power users.

But judging a laptop just on performance is not fair. As these are notebook laptops, other factors, like battery and display, must be taken into consideration.

In that department, the Notebook Ultra is still a better laptop. The display is almost similar, but the battery isn’t.

Also, there is a significant price difference.

Yes, the Notebook Pro 120G is a performer, but when we consider all features, including price, we have to say that Mi Notebook Ultra is a better value-for-money laptop overall.

Looking at the on-paper specifications, it seems like both the Notebook Pro and Ultra are feature-rich laptops. There is hardly any feature that is missing here.

In daily life, both laptops perform great. But which one is better than the other? Let’s find out.

Similarities between Mi Notebook Pro and Ultra

Mi Notebook Pro vs Ultra similarities

Sturdy Build & Clean Design

Both the Mi Notebook Pro and Ultra are made of metal. It’s a Series 6 Aluminum that gives these laptops a sturdy build.

The older Mi Notebook 14 had the best build quality, and the same trend continues here. The moment you hold any of these laptops, you will be surprised with the build quality.

The robust feel will give you confidence that you haven’t invested in the wrong laptop.

Even the lid is also made of metal. However, the bezels around the display are plastic, which is common at this price.

A slight disappointment comes in the form of flex around the keyboard and trackpad. It doesn’t feel that cheap, but it should have been improved.

A student or professional user wants his laptop to look simple and professional. So, both the laptops look clean and simple with no funky design or cutouts.

Same Storage Options

Both MI Notebook Pro and Ultra have the same storage options.

The base variants of both the laptops come with 8GB RAM and 512GB SSD storage, while the upper variants come with 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD.

512GB of storage is the max you get on these laptops. Unfortunately, you can’t upgrade the RAM or storage in either of the laptops.

It would have been great to give the option to expand the memory, at least RAM, but sadly, these laptops lack RAM or storage expansion.

Powerful Processors

All variants of the last-gen Mi Notebook 14 used to offer Intel CPUs, and the same trend continues here.

Till now, there are no Ryzen laptops from Xiaomi.

Now coming to Notebook Pro and Ultra, both of these have the same CPU configurations.

The 8GB variants of both come with Intel i5 11th gen Tiger Lake 11300H processor, and 16GB variants come with Intel i7 11th gen Tiger Lake 11370H processor.

Now you might be wondering, what is this Tiger lake, and how is it different from the regular 11th gen CPU.

Tiger Lake is an architecture and Intel’s code name for the 11th generation Intel Core mobile processors. (Source)

The H at the end of the CPU name stands for High-Performance Graphics.

The Tiger lake CPUs have more frequency and higher TDP than the regular 11th gen CPU, which results in better performance.

So both the Notebook Pro and Ultra have more powerful CPUs that can handle heavy tasks like 3D rendering more effectively.

In everyday life, both of these laptops perform really well. From booting to app loading, nothing takes much time.

The SSD also plays a vital role in delivering a smooth performance.

No matter which laptop you pick, you will get satisfactory performance.

But keep in mind that both of these laptops are made for professionals who do casual gaming. If you are a heavy gamer, then skip these laptops, or you can check out these budget gaming laptops.

Other Useful features

What we loved the most about these laptops are the features. It’s glad to see that Xiaomi hasn’t skimped on useful features, even on the lower variants.

  • This time around, Mi laptops come with a fingerprint scanner and a backlit keyboard.
  • The traditional charger is now gone and replaced with a Type-C charger. You can put it in both Type C port or thunderbolt 4 port to charge the laptop.
  • Both variants come with dual 2W speakers. At first, these speakers sound tiny. But you need to change one setting for better audio. Follow the steps to get a louder sound. In the Windows start menu, search for ‘DTS’. Now open the app called DTS Audio Processing. Finally, choose the Game Mode to get a louder sound.
  • The inclusion of the Thunderbolt 4 port makes these laptops future-proof. If you have a Thunderbolt 4 supported external SSD, then you can get a whopping speed of 40GB/s.
  • Both the laptops come with an integrated webcam.

The list of similar features between these two laptops goes on, but these were the most important ones.

Now here comes the difference between Mi Notebook Pro and Ultra.

Difference between Mi Notebook Pro and Ultra

Mi Notebook Pro vs Ultra differences

Form Factor

Both the laptops are made for two different audiences.

Mi Notebook Pro is a 14-inch laptop that is made for portability. It’s a lightweight laptop that you can carry easily.

The Notebook Ultra, on the other hand, is a 15.6-inch laptop that is made for productivity.

Now, which one is better in terms of form factors?

It’s completely your choice. If you prefer a smaller and portable laptop, then Notebook Pro is ideal, but if you want a bigger display, then Notebook Ultra is the best option.

For designing, coding, or editing, bigger screens are preferred. But for making presentations or doing office work, smaller screens are best.

Note that the 15.6-inch screen on the Ultra doesn’t look too big because of the tiny bezels.

Display Quality & Refresh Rate

The biggest difference between Notebook Pro and Ultra is the display. But to be honest, this biggest difference isn’t significant.

How?

The Notebook Pro has a 14-inch QHD+ display (2560×1600), resulting in 215 PPI. On the other hand, Notebook Ultra has a 3.2K resolution (3200×2000), resulting in 241 PPI.

Both the displays are extremely vivid and sharp, and this 26 PPI difference isn’t evident for a regular user.

What’s evident in the display is the refresh rate. Notebook Ultra has a 90Hz panel which is slightly smoother.

From web browsing to scrolling, everything feels smooth on Notebook Ultra.

But the question is, Is it worth paying extra for a 90Hz panel?

In our honest opinion, the 90Hz refresh rate makes only a slight difference. It’s evident but doesn’t make a night and day difference.

So, if the price difference is Rs 3000, then save some money and go for the Notebook Pro as it already has an impressive display.

But if the price difference is Rs 1000-1500, then going to Ultra makes more sense as you will get extra smoothness and slightly better sharpness.

Mi Notebook Pro: 4.2
Mi Notebook Ultra: 4.3

Winner: Mi Notebook Ultra

Battery Life

On paper, there is a significant difference in the battery. Notebook Ultra’s 70 Watt-Hours battery seems more promising than the 56 Watt-Hours on Notebook Pro.

But how much of a difference does it make?

In the real world, both laptops give nearly the same battery life.

Xiaomi has intentionally given a larger battery of Ultra because its large 90Hz display with higher PPI is going to consume more battery life.

Luckily, both laptops offer a solid battery life. The company claims 11 hours of battery life on Pro and 12 on Ultra, but with regular use, both of these can last for 7-8 hours with ease.

However, on the same workload, the Notebook Ultra manages to last for extra 30 minutes.

Running heavy software might decrease the battery life significantly on both.

So overall, there is very little difference in the battery life of Notebook Pro and Ultra, and both can last for full-day on a single charge.

In our honest opinion, if the price difference is Rs 3000, you should go for the Mi Notebook Pro.

Why? Because this laptop has all the features that you would need. It is powerful yet small in size and easy to carry.

So it’s better to go for the MI Notebook Pro and save some money.

The additional features you get on the Ultra are worth paying extra Rs 1500.
